All hail the power of the Instapundit. All Glenn Reynolds has to do is suggest that there is an easy way for all of us neophyte bloggers to crash the big party. And he is right, it is easy. As always the first step is the hardest. With a grateful nod to Virginia Postrel, let's roll.
Everyone remembers the flag draped dump trucks that converged on the World Trade Center in the days following 9/11. All of us who happen to drive dump trucks for a living could indentify with those guys. The honest patriotism and heartfelt emotion evident in those displays were part of the larger national feelings of solidarity and resolve. We see this today in the countless flags flying from vehicles of all types--large and small. But let us not forget that a proper respect for that flag reguires us to retire it when it becomes frayed and tattered. After all the Stars and Stripes that you attached to your antenna is not a relic of the Battle of Antietam, it just looks like it. So let us retire our noble emblems of our love of country when they reach the end of their useful lives. Replace them with new expressions of Old Glory in all her majesty and might. May she always wave over the land of the free and the home of the brave.
